Flying to Eugene

We have a small airport (EUG), but direct tickets are difficult to find unless you are coming from the west coast. Non-West-Coasters will most likely have to change flights in Portland.

The Eugene Airport is located just outside Eugene to the west. There are several rental car kiosks at the airport itself: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National. There is also an OmniShuttle for those not looking to rent. The OmniShuttle kiosk is located right next to the baggage claim and is generally about $20 to get to downtown Eugene. Similarly, there are taxi pickups outside arrival and they are also about $20 to the downtown area.

Flying to Portland

We often fly in and out of Portland, since it is cheaper for us to do so. However, the cost of a rental car or a train ticket may offset the savings. For our guests who want to take some time to travel in Oregon, however, flying in to Portland may work best for you.

The Portland International Airport (PDX) is quite large with all the typical rental car services and conveniences. The route from Portland to Eugene is quite simple: just follow I-5 south for about two hours.

Driving to Eugene

Whether you are coming from the north or south (or even the east, really), getting to Eugene is very simple.

Eugene lies just off the I-5 main highway - the Central Corridor. It is also possible, for long distances, to travel along 101 on the coast (which is far prettier than the commercial I-5 route). However, the coastal route will add a considerable amount of travel time. Recommended for those with plenty of leisure!

The best exit for getting into Eugene from the north (I-5 South) or south (I-5 North) is the same: exit number 194B. From Portland, the trip takes about 2.5 hours if you are Josh and 2 hours if you are Colleen. We won't give you estimates from California in order to protect the innocent.

Training to Eugene

The train is another, excellent option! It's a little on the slow side, but the view is much better than the rather ugly I-5 highway. Our officiant Uriah is an ardent fan of the train system and frequently uses it to visit us from Seattle.

The Amtrak train to Eugene is the "Coast Starlight" and the train depot is located in north Eugene in the cozy shadow of Skinner's Butte. The station is only a few blocks from downtown (and only six from our apartment), but if you don't feel like walking with your baggage, there are taxi pickups outside the depot. It is a little inconvenient to walk from the station to a car rental agency, but a taxi could take you to a near-ish Budget Rental in about five minutes.

I believe there is currently a "buy one get one free" offer for the Coast Starlight. Please inquire with Amtrak directly for details.
